Hardwick Middle School

Hardwick Middle School Sports College

INFORMATION

Sports Colleges

At Hardwick we aim to give every youngster, of whatever aptitude or interest, the opportunity to be successful, and to grow and develop into outstanding citizens.

Our designation as a Specialist Sports College allows us to harness the motivated and successful spirit displayed on the sports field, and use it across all aspects of learning in school. We place an emphasis on supporting youngsters to take responsibility for their learning and to take up the leadership of all areas of school life. We like to feel that we encourage our students to be forward looking whilst still maintaining the traditional values of respect, courtesy, honesty, and endeavor.

The strong and formalised collaborative that we enjoy with King Edward VI School allows us to provide aspirational experiences for our students and demonstrates our commitment to continuing our interest in our students once they leave the school.

Our expectations of our youngsters are high. We aim to challenge, motivate and engage them in all aspects of their learning so that we can be sure that they have every chance to reach their potential. We encourage and train our students to be partners in learning with our staff and provide many opportunities for students to actually lead learning.

Our most recent Ofsted inspection in March 2012 rated us as ‘good’. Therefore our aim is to be ‘outstanding’ by March 2013.

We expect our students to make very effort to be successful and we support them in this by making sure that our 'Six Keys to Success' are embedded in everything we do.

We are a mixed, co-educational, community comprehensive school of children aged 9 to 13 years with approximately 400 on our roll..

The school is organised into four year groups which are subdivided into sixteen vertical form groups of approximately 22 students, each in the care of a Form Tutor. They are supported in their work by two Key Stage Leaders of Learning who have overall responsibility for students' progress and well being. In turn a member of the Leadership Team has overall responsibility for pastoral care and guidance in the school. We place a strong emphasis on student welfare and guidance to ensure that all of our youngsters' potential is realised.

For learning purposes we set students in Maths and English and band in Science. For all other subjects students are taught in mixed ability groups.

The school is established in purpose built single storey buildings built on two low levels. However, a lift means that the whole school is wheelchair accessible. The school is set away from the road down a tree lined drive which leads to extensive grounds. These include playing fields, numerous sports pitches, hard courts, a trim trail, gardens and an environmental studies area.

We are fortunate to have excellent facilities and a pleasant learning environment. Our ICT facilities are excellent and are constantly being extended. Students use these in all curriculum areas and also for individual work at lunchtimes.

We have two specialist Science Laboratories, two large specialist Art areas alongside a Food Technology room and Technology workshop. A large well stocked library complements our facilities. We have a large sports hall adjacent to our dining room, which is also a drama area and converts to a stage for our numerous school productions. A music suite of two rooms set aside from the main school supports the extensive music opportunities which are available.
